What distinguishes Berlin from other
cities opened to the world? First Berliners themselves, whose gruff charm but
welcoming gives the city a so unique atmosphere. And of course a range of
sights, incredible richness reflecting the atmosphere of renewal and air time,
but also highlights the history and drama of the twentieth century.
In their minds, Berlin is immediately
associated with the Brandenburg Gate, probably the most famous landmark of the
capital. Symbol of division for decades, it forms the heart of a bustling
metropolis since a long time ago, full of ideas, impulses, art, culture and
creativity. The west of the city is marked by the Kurfürstendamm, an ultimate
stylish avenue, the "Kaufhaus des Westens", more known as KaDeWe,
shops and refined trend galleries, but also beautiful residential districts
and, of course the famous nightlife of Berlin.
In this regard, an evening at the Palace
Friedrichstadt is clear: the biggest stage of varieties of Germany presents
SHOW ME, a show considered the most expensive and most beautiful of all time.
Guaranteed glamor for real fireworks fire lights, colors, costumes and effects.
A cosmopolitan atmosphere also rules the Regierungsviertel (government
district), which extends eastward from the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag
nearby. Peace and freedom are now well kept, unlike the days when inconceivable
crimes were committed from Berlin. Right next to the Brandenburg Gate, the
"Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe", designed by New York
architect Peter Eisenman, recalls this period, as the memorial "Topography
of Terror" located in the former headquarters of the Gestapo.
The great luxury avenue of Unter den
Linden runs eastward towards Alexanderplatz, along the way the Museum Island
listed as a World Cultural Heritage, Berlin Cathedral, the Neue Wache (New
guard) and Baroque building Zeughaus (Arsenal), which now houses the
"Deutsches Historisches Museum" (Museum of German history). Further
is the TV Tower, the tallest building in Germany to date. It offers a panorama
of high-flying, literally, of Berlin and Brandenburg. Not far away lies the
Gendarmenmarkt. This site generally is considered the most beautiful of Berlin
together with the Deutscher Dom (German Cathedral), the French cathedral
(French cathedral) and the Konzerthaus, a set of absolutely majestic scale. Less
majestic but more relaxed and light, the Hackescher Höfe, still in
Berlin-Mitte, constitute the largest group of private German courses and are
classified as historic monuments since 1977. This authentic part of the old
Berlin features a colorful mix of Art galleries,
cinemas, theaters and varieties, pubs, restaurants and bars, quaint shops and
showcases brands. Here reigns the creative atmosphere that even now, nearly a
quarter of a century after the fall of the wall, marks the city certainly more
than any other.
